For international students and recent grads
The work visa with no lottery. See how close you are to an O-1A.
Tell us about your record and when your OPT ends. We send back a roadmap: the shortest path to evidence under three of the O-1A’s eight criteria, how long each step takes, and how that compares with the time you have left.
- Free during early access
- Made by hand within 48 hours
- Not legal advice
Why the O-1A
An H-1B depends on an employer willing to sponsor you and on winning a lottery. An O-1A depends on your record, and a record is something you can build.
- No lottery and no annual cap.
- It can be filed at any time of year.
- The $100,000 H-1B fee does not apply to it.
- It still needs a petitioner: a U.S. employer, a U.S. agent, or your own company. You cannot file it for yourself.
The name puts people off. “Extraordinary ability” sounds like it means a Nobel Prize. In practice, the rules ask for evidence under at least three of eight criteria, and then look at the record as a whole.
The eight criteria, in plain words
- Awards. Nationally or internationally recognized prizes for excellence in your field.
- Memberships. Associations that admit people for outstanding achievement, judged by experts.
- Press. Articles about you and your work in major media or trade publications.
- Judging. Reviewing or judging other people’s work: peer review, competition panels.
- Original contributions. Work of major significance to your field, shown by how others use it.
- Scholarly articles. Papers you wrote, in professional journals or major media.
- Critical role. A leading or critical role at an organization with a distinguished reputation.
- High pay. A salary that is high compared with others in your field.
Source: 8 CFR 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B). Covers science, engineering, business, education and athletics. Arts, film and TV use the O-1B, which has a different test; this roadmap does not cover it.
What your roadmap shows
- What in your record supports each criterion, and what cuts against it.
- The three criteria that look closest for you.
- The evidence to build for each one, and roughly how long it takes.
- Your runway: that path set against when your OPT or STEM OPT ends.
- One next step for this month.
It will not say you qualify or give you odds. Nobody honest can tell you that from a form. Before anyone files, an immigration attorney should review the record.

What this is not
Vadens is not a law firm and files nothing. The roadmap is information, not legal advice, and it is not a decision about whether you qualify. Talk to a licensed immigration attorney before anyone files. Vadens is not affiliated with any university.
What happens to what you send
- We use your answers and CV only to make your roadmap. A person reads every one, sometimes with help from AI tools.
- They are stored privately in Vadens’ database. We don’t sell them or share them.
- We never ask for your passport, SEVIS ID or any government number. Please leave them off your CV.
- Reply to your roadmap email and we delete everything you sent. When the pilot ends, we delete it all.
- This page counts visits and form submissions. It does not record what you type.
